Disaster Recovery

The Problem

“Roughly one third of all UK businesses and two thirds of large businesses had a security incident that involved loss of data.”

DTI ISBS Survey 2004

“34% of companies fail to test their backups, of those that do, 77% have found tape backup failures.”

Research by the Boston Computing Network

This results in loss of revenue, whilst data is restored.

Examples

A document management company based in Nottingham recently experienced database corruption. Their solution was mirrored to a second server and backed up on tape. It took two days to restore the corrupted database from their tape back up.

An online ticket retailer based in London had previously outsourced their hosting to a specialist provider, ensuring the data centre had uninterruptible power supply, backup generators, air conditioning, fire suppression and a daily back up solution, however their web site went down, due to hard drive failure and the recovery time to repair the server, get back online, restore the data from the backup tapes and reconfigure the web site took 24 hours to complete. The company lost 24 hours of revenue.

A well known manufacturer and online retailer, based in Derbyshire was hosting their data with a communications provider. They relied on their web site for the majority of their sales revenue and used it to display their presence in a niche market. They had two servers hosted with the supplier when disaster struck. One server failed and it took the provider two weeks to order and replace the part, leaving the customer in limbo. Two weeks of sales revenue was lost and hundreds of customers presumed the company had become bankrupt and changed suppliers.

The Solution

Host your data on our Dell dedicated servers combined with the state of the art EqualLogic iSCSI Storage Area Network (SAN), previously only available for governments and banks. Its pay-as-you-go RAID 50 IPSAN network allows you to roll back to one of 255 snapshots and be back online within minutes. What’s more you can keep the corrupted volume to restore transactions from.
